Transitions from Coaching to Working

We should take as a maxim never to be surprised at current difficulties, no more than at a passing breeze, because with a little patience we shall see them disappear. Time changes everything.”

— St. Vincent de Paul

I now have a job and am working as a nurse. I love every second. It is fast-paced, challenging, and keeps me humble with all there is to do and what I fail to do. Moreover, I am working night shift with an ever-changing schedule. All the science in the world about recovery and training no longer applies as I am breaking all the rules; get adequate sleep, eat consistently, exercise on a regular schedule, and caffeine – actually, I have cut back dramatically, but the sleep and eating exercise schedule -woaza it is hard to maintain. How to manage all of this?

First thing I have learned, fiber is your friend. Oatmeal with yogurt, fruit, and nuts. The nuts will increase my magnesium, as well as providing good prebiotics in the gut via the non-soluble fiber. Yogurt helps with prebiotics, or gut brain axis, important for immune health as well. Meanwhile the fruit is full of antioxidants while increasing dietary fiber and mild hydration to a point. It is important. I have started supplements with magnesium and creatine. Magnesium is important as I can feel the effects almost immediately, and as for creatine, I am still weighing in.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick from the podcast Found my Fitness has been a favorite of mine. I heard her on Peter Attia or Huberman Lab a while ago, but this podcast https://youtu.be/JCTb3QSrGMQ?si=bFBR0Ggs1_rqu_Cw became my new favorite as she delves into important topics such as working while trying to stay fit. In the episode she covers bare bones supplements. I will eventually do a favorite podcast/book page. Most of my current patterns and new habits are based on her research and what I have learned from her and other podcasts like The Drive from Peter Attia.

The second thing is recovery and training. I have stopped measuring my recovery only because I don’t want to know. I wish I could I am using all moments to take deep breaths and move. I am struggling with getting enough quality exercise. I am struggling to get a pattern in. I am struggling because I so tired from working night shift. What I can say is I am learning to bike commute, and that has become an invaluable experience. I play music or meditate while riding to work, and lately, the sun has been setting low, making it powerful to ground and move while commuting. I highly recommend bike commuting. The challenge now is it is dark and raining. So, I bought lights and am shopping for rainproof bags and other essentials. This is an ongoing experiment. If anyone has any tips, I am all for it.
